Replacing Pipes Where They Were vs. Rerouting — Why Layout Matters

The Situation
This home in Plano, Texas had an under-slab cast iron sewer system that needed full replacement. As with many homes of this era, the original cast iron piping was laid in a way that required significant tunneling beneath the slab if replaced exactly where it existed.
At first glance, replacing the pipes in their original locations would have been a straightforward approach — but not necessarily the most efficient one.
Two Valid Options — Very Different Outcomes
There were two technically correct ways to replace the cast iron sewer system:
- Replace the pipes where they were originally laid, following the same underground paths beneath the slab
- Reroute the new PVC system, adjusting the layout to reduce tunneling while still fully replacing the cast iron system
Both options:
- replaced the under-slab cast iron sewer piping entirely
- met code requirements
- resulted in a fully functional sewer system
The difference was not pipe quality or shortcuts — the difference was excavation.
Why Rerouting Changed the Cost
Under-slab tunneling is the most expensive part of cast iron sewer replacement. Pipe itself is relatively inexpensive; digging is not.
By rerouting the system:
- we reduced the amount of tunneling required
- traded some tunnel work for trenching in the yard, which is typically far less expensive
- eliminated the need for at least one slab access point
In this specific home, rerouting reduced excavation enough that the rerouted solution came in approximately $14,000 less than replacing the pipes exactly where they were originally laid.
That difference existed solely because of layout and access, not because less work was done.
Why This Doesn’t Apply to Every Home
Not all homes can be rerouted.
Fixture placement, structural design, elevation, access, and drainage requirements all matter. Some homes must be replaced in place, and rerouting would either create problems or simply not be possible.
That’s why rerouting is not something that can be assumed — it has to be evaluated honestly on a house-by-house basis.
The Bigger Lesson
Many homeowners assume sewer pipes must be replaced exactly where they already exist. In reality, when a home qualifies, rerouting can significantly reduce excavation without compromising the system.
