The Situation
Before 2016 in Carrollton, Texas, a homeowner was told by another plumbing company that they had three sewer leaks in their cast iron system.
That determination was made using only a sewer camera. No hydrostatic test was performed to confirm whether the system was actually leaking.
When we evaluated the system as a second opinion, we started by performing a hydrostatic test, which is the only proper way to determine if a sewer system is actually leaking.
The system did not leak at that time.
That does not mean the pipe was healthy.
That does not mean replacement would never be needed.
It only means the pipe had not yet failed to the point of leaking at that exact moment in time.
That distinction matters.
Because cast iron failure is progressive. It does not usually fail all at once. It weakens slowly, then eventually fails.
As I am writing this, it is 2026 — over 10 years later. It would be extremely unlikely that same pipe has not continued deteriorating.
The point of this case is not that cast iron sometimes doesn’t leak.
The point is that cameras cannot prove leaks — and they cannot prove pipe health either.
What Sewer Cameras Actually Do — and What They Don’t
Sewer cameras are very useful tools when used correctly.
They can help identify blockages, stoppages, crushed or collapsed pipe, bellies in the line, and help locate pipe underground.
But cameras can only show the inside surface of a pipe. They cannot measure pipe thickness. They cannot confirm structural strength. They cannot see water leaking outside the pipe wall. They cannot predict remaining lifespan.
Cast iron pipe begins corroding the day it is installed. After decades of wastewater, chemicals, and acidic soil exposure, most cast iron will look rough on camera. That appearance alone does not confirm failure — and it does not confirm safety either.
Because of this, statements like “your cast iron looks good” or “you have years left” are opinions, not measurable facts.
Why This Matters in the Real World
We are currently scheduled to replace a cast iron system at a rental property in Mesquite, Texas.
In this case, the pipe has already failed to the point that the sewer will not drain. Another company attempted to clear the line and pulled back mud. The cable nearly became stuck. The line cannot be cleared.
The tenants cannot use the toilets. The owner had to provide a porta-potty.
Situations like this usually don’t happen suddenly. The pipe deteriorates over time until it reaches a failure point.
If replacement happens before total failure, homeowners usually have more control over timing, contractor choice, and overall disruption.
If replacement waits until total failure, decisions are often forced by emergency conditions.
Cast iron replacement is a large, labor-intensive project that typically takes multiple days to complete. Because of this, most companies that specialize in this work are scheduled out several weeks, and sometimes longer.
The Reality of Cast Iron Underground
Our position is simple and based on decades of real-world results:
All underground and under-slab cast iron will eventually fail.
Not every system needs replacement today.
But waiting always increases the risk of failure happening at the worst possible time.
That risk includes:

A camera cannot tell you cast iron is “good,” “safe,” or how long cast iron will last.
