The Truth About Using Credit Cards for Cast Iron Pipe Replacement

June 30, 2025 By In House Plumbing Company

When it comes to pipe replacement services, many homeowners choose to pay with a credit card — and it’s easy to see why. Credit cards offer convenience, purchase protection, and for some, rewards like points, airline miles, or cash back. But when you’re dealing with major projects like old cast iron pipe replacement, those points come with a hidden cost.

Most people don’t realize that businesses pay credit card processing fees, typically between 2.5% and 5%, every time a card is used. On a $20,000 to $50,000 job — which is common for underground pipe replacement — that can add up to thousands of dollars in fees.

That “1% cash back” isn’t free. You’re actually paying more than double that amount in fees just to get it. Credit card companies aren’t giving away money — they’re taking a percentage from the business and passing a small piece of it back to you.

At In-House Plumbing Company, we do things differently. Every proposal we send includes a check discount — which is the amount we would have paid in card processing fees if you chose to pay by credit card. If you want the convenience of a card, you can still do that. But if you’d rather save the fee, paying by check gives you that option up front.

Not all companies offer this. Most just build credit card fees into their prices and don’t give you a way to avoid them.

Transparency is part of how we keep your cast iron pipe replacement cost honest — whether you’re planning a cast iron to PVC conversion or any other major upgrade.
