What to Expect During a Cast Iron Pipe Replacement Project

July 14, 2025 By In House Plumbing Company

If you’re planning an old cast iron pipe replacement, it helps to know what to expect from start to finish. At In-House Plumbing Company, we aim to make the entire process clear, straightforward, and as low-stress as possible.

It starts with a free estimate. We visit your home — inside and out — for about 1 to 2 hours to gather detailed measurements and notes. That info is sent back to our office, where we create a diagram showing how we’ll excavate and reroute the plumbing. Then we send you the estimate by email, usually the same day.

Our proposals include options like warranty length (1, 3, or 5 years), sprinkler and brick reinstatement responsibility, and even a check discount. Occasionally, we offer a 10% discount if the work begins by a certain date, or a small discount for allowing a yard sign after the job is done.

If you decide to move forward, just sign the proposal online — it automatically alerts our team. We’ll contact you within 24–48 hours (Monday through Friday) to schedule the work.

The job itself usually takes 3 to 5 business days, depending on weather and project size. Excavation is typically done first and takes 1 to 2 days. Plumbing usually follows on day two but may extend into day three on larger projects. Inspections are often completed on day three but can also fall on day four. Backfill may happen the same day as the inspection or could extend into day four or five depending on several factors.

You can remain in the home during the project. Water isn’t shut off completely, but there will be periods where usage is limited. You don’t need to be home full-time, but we do need access to all areas inside and around the house.

Whether you’re planning an underground pipe replacement or a cast iron to PVC conversion, we keep the cast iron pipe replacement cost transparent — and the process clear.
