Will Replacing Cast Iron Pipes with PVC Solve the Problem Forever?

August 11, 2025 By In House Plumbing Company

When homeowners consider pipe replacement services, it’s often because their old cast iron pipes are failing. The truth is, cast iron sewer lines will go bad — it’s just a matter of when. Corrosion, cracks, and blockages are guaranteed over time, especially in older North Texas homes.

That’s why many homeowners choose a cast iron to PVC conversion. PVC is durable, resistant to corrosion, and designed to last decades. It’s a major upgrade. But it’s important to understand that replacing cast iron with PVC doesn’t mean you’ll never have a plumbing issue again.

Why? Because no pipe material is immune to movement — and here in North Texas, we have some of the most active soils in the country. Expanding and contracting clay soils, along with foundation shifts, can cause PVC pipes to crack, misalign, or even come apart over time. In particular, transitions between old cast iron and new PVC under the slab can be vulnerable if the structure moves enough.

We tell every customer: the reason to replace cast iron isn’t to eliminate all future problems — it’s because cast iron is a known failure. You’re replacing something you know will go bad with something that should last much longer.

At In-House Plumbing Company, we take care to install systems that are built to hold up. Our underground pipe replacement process is designed for long-term success, but we also believe in setting honest expectations.

If you’re evaluating the cast iron pipe replacement cost, it’s worth knowing you’re making the right move — just not a forever guarantee.
